They should practically be touching at 20 yds. If you think you will hit a leg than you shouldn't hunt until your confident where your arrow is going.
Agreed. Many people think if they can get it in a 6" plate every time that, that's good enough. Not for me, nor do I think for others. Do you have to shoot as tight as groups as what I shoot, no but you should never settle for good enough, keep shooting and be the best you can be. You need to be confident, shooting a bow is mostly mental especially once you get the mechanics down. You need to see the shot into the animal/target. You need to will the shot into the animal/taget. If you think you will send it into the leg, chances are, you will.
Keep practicing and until you, yourself are confident to get the job done.
