Man, what happened?

It's hard to say, you mentioned that you may have nailed him in the rump? If that were the case you may never find him as that shot would more than likely not kill him.

If you did nail him in the gut you still may never find him. When deer are hit in the gut even with a gun they can run and run and run and when they stop it can and will take a long time for them to pass.

And if you do find them the meat is not safe to eat due to bacteria from the gut. If you don't find him soon and the weather not cool you may just have to write the deer off, unfortunatly.

last year at our camp a member nailed a deer in the gut with a rifle and it took hours to find him and it was by sheer luck. By the time we did find him he had already started to swell up pretty bad.

Look again tomorrow if you can and try and find some new signs, remember some deer will not run as far as you think. And at times when given a gut shot the deer will run like heck at first but return to their surrounding to rest/die.

So, your deer may be closer than you think.
