The .243's energy levels might merit some examination for it's effectiveness in 'long range' shooting of whitetails; I believe it's retained energy might be a little low much beyond 250-275 yards, with a few factory Remington loads not even rated at 1000 ft pounds at 300 yards with a 24" bbl, where as your -06 will not suffer this malady until 400+ yards.
Although I've not personally used this caliber, I'm sure it will get the job done, and a close friend has never lost a whitetail with one, albeit with carefully chosen broadside shots.
