Default Converting a .22 to a .17 Mach 2

I've inherited a Savage Model 3B (I think it was made in the 1930's or 40's) single shot .22long/short rifle from my late Grandfather a number of years ago that had a broken bolt...
Believe it or not, it did come in useful forteaching my son the practical use of firearm handling/safety before he recieved his hunting licence..
But lately I've been thinking about getting it back into shooting condition
and was thinking if it is at all posibleto change the chamber dimensions
of this .22 to a .17 Mach 2...
Can I safely convert the .22rifle to a .17 Mach 2 cal. without the posibility of the breech of the gun blowing up in my face when I fired it...
