You did the right thing. If the hit is as you say he will bed down quickly and should stay there. I would give him at least 8 hours and go back, checking the last place you saw him. work slow and get some help doing a grid search. Liver hit deer don't seem to go more than 100 yards, and the bed down fast. I guess it is painful or really zaps their strength, but in any case he should be close.
