I've hunted/ shot both, heard good/bad stories about both and with all that in mind my last rifle for hunting I bought was a 7mm mag. A lot more range and knock down power.Add a muzzle brake and it kicks like my sons 243, my wife even shoots. I hunt open areas where long range shots are pretty comon and didnt have the confidencein the 308 or the 3006
