That's a personal opinion. I personally believe you don't need that heavy of a cal. to kill a deer. If I hunted other large game then maybe I would have one. I hunt deer and turkey. I don't need one to kill a deer. Is it too much? Well it will definately get the job done, but so will a .243 or .270. I really believe it is a little too much for just Whitetails. It's kind of like shooting turkeys with a 10 guage. You can kill them but you really don't need quite that much fire power. Just my opinion. If you use a .300 that's perfectly fine.
