I think you are absolutely right. Although I use a peep I have practiced without one with very good results. Just ain't got the balls to hunt without it. The whole idea of a peep or a "No-Peep" is to assure that your anchor is consistent. If your anchor is, indeed, very consistent then there really is no need of more gadgets for hunting type distances.
Now for target that may be a different story. You start getting past 40 yards or so and it takes a very consistent anchor to get those small groups.
