How do I tell what the twist is on my flintlock? I bought a used tc hawkens and the guy didnt know what the twist was. Is there a way to tell? It's not on the barrel as far as I can read.
Thanks in advance.
Is this a Hawkins or Renegade? It is probably 1:48 twist being a Thompson Center although there was a time they had some 1:66 twist barrels out there.
You can put a cleaning jag on your ramrod.Push a patch to the bottom of the breech then measure the amount the ramrod moves in relation to the amount it rotates in the barrel for a set distance (I like to use 12 inches). A 1:48 twist, the ramrod will make a complete rotation in 48 inches.
The problem with this method is often times, the person doing the test will straight pull the patch back up and not allow it to turn which makes the guess of the rifleing twist hard to do.
