Eventually they all start splintering.I use a cheap open layered foam target from Dicks sporting goods. It'not really thick and the BH's stickout the back after the shot. I unscrew them,pull out the shaft. This avoids cutting the target in both directions. When the target is really worn and I start getting pass thru's I put a couple ratchet straps around the target and crank it down to compress the layers again,doubles the life of your target.
