We got our fall double!
Well, we did it! We achieved our goal of getting a double this fall. My dad and I have been hunting turkeys together for 10 years but never scored a double together. I have done it twice in the spring with my cousin but never with my dad until this Saturday!
We went to the same spot we went to the previous Saturday and we sat not to far from where we set up last week. While we were discussing where to sit we spooked 1 turkey out of its roost almost above us so we sat right where we were standing. When it got light the turkeys started talking on the roost. This time they were directly in front of us 50-75 yards away. This was the same flock we met up with last week so I would say there was about 50 birds in all. They were very vocal and they started flying down all around us but we were set up in an akward place so they were all around but we could not move. If we set at the same trees as last week we would of had a front row seat for the show because they put on a clinic again with all the turkey talk. We even heard 4 or 5 gobbles with alot of half gobbles from jakes. We were even laughing at the young gobblers because they sounded terrible. Finally most of them walked out of view so we repositioned ourselves so we can see where they all landed. That is when I started calling. I was using a mouth call by lohman and it did the job. I tried to imiatate the most vocal hen and it brought them right back where they started. In fact the hen was clucking constantly almost sounding like she was cutting. The probelm was I had some big timber in the view of the hens but my dad had a great view but he would not shoot until I gave him the signal that I can shoot also. There were 2 vocal hens and about 15 jakes following her. Finally she presented a shot at about 12 yards so I told my dad to shoot but I shot first and MISSED! After I shot my dad shot so I stood up thinking I got the hen but I realized I missed but the jakes were running around in circles not knowing what way to go so I put the tru-glo's on one of them but this time I connected. We did it! We got a pair of nice jakes. Man was that exciting!
I was proud of the fact we both had ample opportunities to shoot turkeys but we both showed patience and did not shoot until we both had shots. This was our 1st fall turkeys we ever shot. I told my dad at breakfast afterwards we were missing the boat the last 10 years by just hunting spring turkeys because it does not get much better than that!
