Found someone's article about the MX4's vs Slick Tricks

This is not my article but I have been wondering about the performance of these two. In particular the new MX4's so I have found this quite helpfull. Enjoy

I finally had the chance to test the slick tricks head to head with the new muzzy mx4’s. This is the first time I’ve seen either, so I’d like to think I’m objective.

First off I want to say that in no way am I suggesting that your setup will produce the same results as mine. I’m sharing my experience in hopes of some feedback and discussion about the new fixed 4-blade designs.

My bow…. 2002 Hoyt Havoc. 65#. 27.5” dl. Biscuit. Peep. D-loop. 2213 xx75 cut to 26 3/4” with three 4” straight vanes. Geeky info I guess but you gotta figure every setup is gonna give slightly different results. Anyway,

I mail ordered both direct from the manufacturers. ST’s were $26 shipped and the mx4’s were 22.95 plus 9 for shipping so $31.95.

What I got: 100 gr. mx4’s… 3 broadheads, a broadhead wrench, one set of practice blades, plastic case for the blades, 3 bumper stickers, a catalog, and a coupon for $5 off next purchase.

100 gr. ST’s…..3 broadheads and 4 washers.

Side by side: The mx4 is a larger looking head. The blades appear more polished and the whole look is more professional. You can see from the pic below how the blades are locked into the ferrules. The mx4 blades are seated with the screw on tip, while the ST’s are seated at the base when you screw it into the insert of your arrow. Both were relatively easy to set up with no obvious manufacturing flaws. The Muzzy ferrule feels like that light aluminum alloy stuff you expect in a broadhead. The ST feels a lot more substantial. It’s steel or whatever, but definitely a more dense and rigid metal. This seems logical since both are 100 grains and the mx4 is larger. The ST blades are thicker as well. I touched up both sets of blades with a sharpener but I suspect they were plenty sharp enough for most folks.

I shot both using the actual cutting blades at a measured 25 yards. I shot both about 6-7 times, then switched arrows and shot them another 6 or 7 times. The ST flies better than any fixed blade I’ve ever shot. They fly straight, just like a field point and just like a good mechanical. The mx-4 flies pretty good, but it consistently rolled on me about halfway to the target. This is the reason I switched arrows after about 6 shots…to make sure it wasn’t a poorly weighted arrow or something.

The mx-4 ended up within a coffee can of the x every time but once. The ST was inside the coffee can ring every time. The only draw back to the ST was noise. I swear it makes some kind of whistling noise when it’s flying. I tried tightening, aligning changes, etc. and it still made a noise. I’d like to have someone else listen when I shoot to figure out if it’s really that noticeable or if I’m just being picky.

Penetration into the target was roughly the same for both. However, it appeared to me that the ST’s actually held their edge a little better after I was done. Not really that important though.

As far as the noise, I wonder if it’s caused by the flare at the base of the head (see pic below). The flare may be what causes such a stable flight… so I’m not gonna knock the design.

In summary…I shot an NAP scorpion mechanical this past year and I like them okay. They fly exactly like my field points and they got the job done on two does. I still worry about them not opening. In my opinion fixed blades are the best choice for once the arrow gets there but the problem is watching the dern things fly like a kite in a storm on the way. I’d like the best of both worlds.

I’ll say I’m extremely impressed with the ST’s. I was expecting good results and I got great results from them. They fly straight. The mx-4, even though it rolls, would have found it’s mark roughly 13 out of 14 times…much better than most fixed blades available… but that one miss didn’t even hit the block.

The bottom line for me is that I’ll hunt with the slick tricks next year. Sorry to be long winded. Any thoughts?
