RE: New to archery elk hunting
I'm certainly no expert on elk as I've been on one bowhunt and successfully took a 6X5 bull. All I can suggest is information on bow setups, KE and what worked for me.
I was shooting a '97 Hoyt Tenacity at 70lbs. My arrow was the Beman Trophy Hunters 70-90 with a 100 grain Muzzy 3 blade. This setup gave me close to 80 ft lbs of KE...I had a complete passthru on a bull at 33 yards.
My partner on the hunt knocked a bull of his feet with the same setup.
I too would recommend a heavier arrow be it carbon or aluminum and a quality fixed blade broadhead be replaceable blades or solid blade cut on impact style.
Many outfitters won't accept mechanical heads although many bulls have fallen to them.
You'll want as much poundage as you can handle comfortably for maximizing your KE....
Shot placement is the most critical point. Good luck and let us know how you made out. Several members here are veteran elk chasers with a bow.
