If you are 18, but under 21, you can get an FOID card if your parent or legal guardian "co-signs" for you & you can only purchase long gun and long gun ammo til 21, no matter what. You cannot possess a handgun either unti 21, unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who is or over.
