Default RE: What's a realistic hunting arrow speed today

ORIGINAL: Rickmur

Shot through my new crony yesterday and shot at 260 fps. I'm shooting a Hoyt Magnatec with xt2000 limbs set at 65# and shooting a CX300 30" arrow with a 100 grain tip. In todays world of 300 fpsbows is 260 fpsan average hunting speed in todays world of 300+ fps bows that are on the market. Just curious, I'm happy with what I have thats all.
That's a good speed for that bow and poundage IMO.Most of the 300+ bows, are not gettingover 300fps...ready for hunting unless they are using the lightest arrow they can..My Diamond is rated at 316 IBO,and with a 375 gr arrow shoots an average of 290fps.That's 26 fps less than IBO.That's at 70# too.

Yes my arrow is 30fps faster, with a 15gr lighter arrow, but my bow has 5 more pounds of pull, and a very very hard cam.I am actually shooting around 5.3gr per pound of pull. You are shooting an arrow that weighs around 390gr...which is 6gr per pound of pull for a 65# bow.If I were to be shooting an arrow that was 6gr per pound of pull(420gr arrow),I would probably be shootingcloser to280fps.

6gr per pound of pull is what I have always been told is a good weight for a hunting arrow. Not too heavy not too light. Most of the people I know that shoot arrows that weigh 6gr per pound with60# bows(approx. 360gr arrows)are in the 245-255 range.,and friends shooting 70# bows (approx. 420 gr arrows)are around the 275-285 range....

So I would Imagine a 65# bow with a 390gr arrow would be right down the middle.Probably 255-265 depending on bow,cam,accessories...etc.

Your 65# bowshooting a 389gr arrowat 260fps is pretty realistic to me.That gives you 58lbs of KE....I would be very pleased with that.

If you did want to go lighter say to around 350gr,you could be knocking on 270fps pretty easy IMO.So,I wouldn't be down about shooting 260fps with a 40gr heavier arrow.

I would stick with the current set up for hunting.

Hope I helped.
