I have a couple of theLeupold VX I's and they are not much more expensive than the rifleman and quite a bit cheaper than the VX II's and especially the VX III's. They are fantastic scopes and I will probably never buy anything else. I feel that the scope mounts are as important as the scope itself (almost) so don't skimp on those. I have had great luck with the Leupold dual dovetail mounts which are very easy to install. Another great thing about Leupold is that if you have a question you can call them right up and they will be glad to help.
