I can usually manipulate the cable into the slot w/out making a great deal of noise or "clank". I just use both hands and guide the cable thru the big part of the slot and get it to where it fits the tree. I then pull the cable up to the small part of the slot while holding the trigger-ma-jig. Hope that makes sense. It usually works for me w/out making noise. Maybe try some moleskin.
