A string board is nice to have, but not a requirement. Cheap and easy to make, you just need the proper measurements. Make one that goes by string length, not bow length, because there's lots of bows that don't go by AMO specs.

I'd start out with dacron string material. It's cheap, and you will need to practice and willprobably make a few strings that aren't quite right. Two colors is easier, especially starting out. You can also practice making loops with sewing thread (very easy). Stringmaker's wax isn't a requirement, but makes it easier. It holds the strands together while you are working, and makes it a little tacky so you can get a better twist. You will want a good serving tool. You can serve a string by hand, but it takes a while. A cheap one is almost worthless, IMO. Spend a few more bucks and get a good one.

I'll p.m. you with more info.
