There has been asomediscussionon what scope bases to use for an Ultra Mag. I have been trying several different options including bases for an Austin & Halleck
Well, one set of bases came in today from Numrich. I purchased from them the suggested bases by Numrich. S-455 base and S-452 base. I removed my scope tonight and did some comparing. The S-455 base in my mind is worthless either as a rear base or a front base. See the picture at the bottom of the page.
The other base shows some promise. as either a front or rear base.
The top picture shows the current installation of a 3x9x40 Bushnell Trophy using a A&H bases and medium Burris "Z" rings. The only problem I have with this installation is the objective is so close to the barrel I can not get a scope cover on and second I would like a little more support on the long portion of the tube.
You can see in pic 3 with the rear base moved to the front I can get a little more support but will need to drill an additional hole.
I am currently waiting for the extended bases from Doc White. The extended front base he is sending should cure my support problem, but not the heighth problem. Of course I could cure that with higher rings.
At this time I am really thinking theWeaver Grand Slam S-415 bases, both front and rear, which are a bit taller is the best all around bet for the White Ultra Mag. This will allow the installation of almost any scope. Be aware that an additional hole will need to be drilled in the base that is installed on the front
