Well, I went out this morning, best morning yet. Heard quite a few different birds today for a switch, they just seemed to be in the right mood today. I had one working right off the roost, my Ole Yeller slate call had him going bonkers. I screwed up and overcalled because I was having so damn much fun listening to him. Anyway, he got within 50 yards and a hen intercepted him. Bummer.
Well, I kept hearing one gobble about every 10 minutes or so and he was in the same place every time, so I figured he was strutting by himself and we may be able to work him. I closed the distance to about 300 yards and he responded very well. I called him down the hill, across the gulley and he was circling behind us. I also got him to within 50 yards or so, but something spooked him. Must have been me, but I don't know what I did.
Went to the house for a quick snack and headed to a different area of the farm around 10. Walked up the hill and across the field where I stopped to do some cutting. I was immediately answered by a booming gobble less than 100 yards away and I still have NO idea why he didn't commit and come on in. Normally, if one gobbles that late in the day they are by themselves and lonely. This is the first one that didn't run me over. Oh well. It was fun. Back at it tomorrow.
edit: I can call birds, get them fired up and everything else, but I SUCK at calling them in. If any of ya'll got any advice for us wannabes......I'd love to hear it.
