RE: Rule of thumb on wind?
The wind evens the playing field. During strong winds look for areas where they have something blocking the wind. The deer will usually bed down on the upper third of the hillside. This gets them out of the direct wind and as the wind blows over the top it will swirl up to them. Kind of like water flowing around a rock in the stream. Still hunt across the side of the ridge and not up and down.
One thing to watch for during strong winds is dead trees falling. As your still hunting glance up from time to time.
