Default RE: Archery Bear in PA?

ORIGINAL: PABowhntr

I tend to believe that I keep an open mind aboutgame management issuesand a variety of other hunting-related topics however, this is one issue thatannoys me a bit. For starters, we, as archers, gain a bear season that, to my knowledge most archers I have spoken with, could care lessabout. There seems to be more support fora longerseason for deer and specifically timewithout otherhunters pursuing other game animals....pheasant, turkey, etc.... yet that doesn't seem to happen.

Second, and no offense to anyone that hunts in the WMUs that are open for this bear season, but whose brilliant idea was it to hold a two day archery bear hunt in the middle of the week in November and only in select WMUs? First off guys are going to have take off time from work to hunt it. Wouldn't it have been smarter to have it on a Saturday? Second, why is it in the middle of November instead of during some overlap with the pre-existing archery season for deer when more hunters are already out in the woodsand could take advantage of it? Third, it isn't even offered in all the WMUs thattypically produce substantial bear harvests. WMU 3D which is one of the WMUs that not only typically has a high bear harvest but also was originally involved in the "extended bear season during rifle" isn't even included.Where was the logic in that? Lastly, why even have it? They cannot even remotely expect to be able to use this season as some type of management tool. I would be sincerely surprised to even see double digits in terms of animals legally harvested during the two day season.

Sorry for ranting but this irks me for some reason.
Agreed 100%. I don't know how people plan to kill them with a bow without the use of bait with a bow. The guys I know of around my dads place in Bradford County (3B....high bear kill area) that consistently kill them are doing it by drives.....how in the heck are they going to do this with a bow? I can't imagine the amount of $$$ it took to pass this season in terms of man hours etc but this is the worst idea I have seen PGC come up with in a while. Why now allow people to arrow a bear during the first 2 weeks of deer/archery season? This is what they do in VT and that would actually give some people an opportunity to shoot at one that they happened to bump into during archery deer season.
