Honestly if bears were the main worry I'd have one of those industrial sized cans of Bear spray. They nuke a path like you wouldn't believe.
You just barely have to aim and let em' have it. I doubt there's a black bear in the world that would come through that fog.

If you're slightly worried about the bears and a little more worried about the 2 legged types........the bear spray on one hip and something like the new Springfield XD .45 ACP with 2 full mags should do just fine.
Would double as an extremely effective home defense gun as well.

Either will work on either.
