Default RE: Wildlife Research Scents

The way i see scents is this . does come into estrus and it takes a couple of days to reach peak. now the bucks have been following her for days . she does alot of travelling leaving a scent trail for all to follow if they want her love. putting a cold scent that was taken last year and frozen all year is it going to really smell like the doe that left a scent trail.

I was hunting a thicket once a few years ago in a climber. i shot this good 8 point first thing on the first morning. i thought heck i need to go back and hunt there some more. i did that afternoon. and saw like 10 bucks all small. all headed for a swamp. the next day i saw a few more bucks in the morning and one 4 point with a doe but he was just hanging with her .I returned that afternoon. now i got the show of my life. i wasn't there long when i hear a crashing in the brush and it stopped . then i hear a gutteral grunting and the crashing again. well i thought the big daddy was coming as the crashing got closer.
a doe comes running toward my tree and i am ready . a little toe head buck grunting like the big daddy was on her butt. he stomped and grunted. they did this a while and here comes more bucks. they chased this poor doe around me for a hour. all the sudden they stop and look in one direction. i (sitting motionless and in pain)thought ok the big daddy. i see a big bodied deer coming through the brush and he steps out in the logging road a good 100 yards from the doe who is hiding in a brush top. the biggest 4 point i have ever seen, had at least a 17 spread. raises his head smells the air and takes off for her, now bear in mind he can't see her the stuff is thick. goes right to her. the chase is on. i watched this all afternoon . i mean they were right under the tree had the toe head laying down at the base of my tree. i spit on him and he just laid there.
at dark i was coming down and they spooked and i saw a buck i had not seen. a good 8 point. i was bummed. next morning same tree . i saw the 4 point again headed off in the other direction. i thought huh is it over. i just looked to my right and there stood a 8 point ,40 yards. i went to get a shot and that sucker looked up my tree . i stopped him by just bellowing with my mouth and killed him. good deer.
my lesson was deer know what deer smell like in there area. they live togather all year and communicate through scent. i think i will take my chances on getting close to an old ho like that doe and hoping she is coming in . i think the way to do that is to get into bedding areas heck maybe deer like it in the bedroom also. this day they did. just my opinion and experience. i will spend my money on food to eat to keep me out there . i think the longer your out the higher your chances. persistance pays off!
