Try going back there and position your stand facing the direction of the thick cover where you heard the grunt. Set up your stand so you can see the corn field and the thick cover (if possible) and make sure your stand is setup so the wind dont give you away. My guess it was a big buck and I would be looking for as much evidence for buck signs as possible in the area. Maybe the big boy was coming out of the thick cover later because he knew you were in the area before-hand. Maybe try a new spot close to the area where you think you heard the noise. I personally think it was a buck who came out of the thick cover late and just ran into you. How was the wind blowing? Were you up wind or down wind of the noise?
