This is the second year that I have archery hunted, and my first Mule Deer.
I spotted and staked this deer for about two hours. He was in a sunflower field and all I could see were his horns waking around through the field. It had rained that mourning so it was really easy to keep quiet. I followed him a mile and half (most on my hands and knees) the breeze was a strait crosswind. I got within about 70 yard and he spotted me or some of my movement, because with head down and ears up he stared directly at me without moving for about 15 minutes solid. Then with pure dumb luck my father-in-law and 4 year old son were coming to pick me up. The deer turned and saw the truck coming and started to walk toward me. He stopped broadside at 30 yards. Sunflowers were blocking the back half of the vitals. I had about 6" to slide the arrow in behind the front shoulder and the sunflowers. I actually threw the arrow about 4" to the right of where I was aiming. I am shooting a 405g ACC arrow with Muzzy 100g tip at 280fps. The arrow hit the front shoulder square and knocked the deer right over. The deer got up spun around and could see about 1/2 my arrow sticking out. He feel over a couple of times and started coming right at me, and dropped about 10 ft away. I will tell you the truth that I was a little nervous when he was coming at me, even though I was confident that he never saw me. I didn't know what to do, I just knocked anther arrow and waited for another shot. He never got up again and expired in about a minute. I have never been so exited in my life. It was the best hunt of my life and only my second archery deer ever. I can't wait for next year.
He is a 5x5 and scored 155 P&Y.
