If you are getting better then you should be able to make a basic yelp with any type of call (unless the reeds are stuck or torn). Some folks just can't do it. It took me a little while but I learn just by practice and persistence. The cadence and rhythm are just as important as the sound, so get some tapes and make sure you are doing it correctly.
I would echo the comments about finding some calls from smaller manufacturers. They seem to sound the same from call to call as opposed to mass-produced. I met the Legecy folks at the NWTF recently. I have the Legecy "Fatal Attraction", which is a four-reed call with an inverted V-cut on one side. I like it a lot and it seems well made. Try the XL-3000 from Empire Calls in Liverpool, NY (315-652-3965), which has a high-pitchedinitial sound that breaks into a raspy yelp. I also found some nice calls from Dynamic calls out of Dacula, GA (
www.dynamiccalls.com). They sold me some prototypes of a new call they were making called "The Lap Dance". It is really sweet.
