RE: Hunting Feral Cats
I think it is a hard call. A feral cat will hunt your area and keep moving. He may even have a schedule of sorts. They seem to stay within shotgun range but won't allow any close proximity. However, a farm cat that has had bad experiences with people will act the same way, and they have a wide hunting range. A dumped domesticated cat responds to a food offering relatively quickly. A feral cat is much more cautious. As a kid, my family eventually coaxed a black one in with food. He was a skilled hunter. He would stalk, and was a fast moving blur on the kill. Much faster than a housecat. Most dumped cats don't make the transition to feeding themselves. So said, I am not a cat expert so maybe someone who is will chip in.
