If he will be using it mainly for deer. I would recommend a knife that does not have a blade length longer than about 3-3 1/2 inches. I have so many knifes that have been given to me that are longer than that, that I never use. Personally, my favorite knife is a PUMA 2 3/4 inch blade folding knife.
