I just looked at the other pics. No wonder that it stunk -- it appears that he gut shot it which would explain why he waited for 4 hours after what he described as a decent shot . . . at 5 yards.

It WOULD have smelled bad, but they deer probably lived long enough that the meat hadn't gone bad yet.
