I'd say tossing a spinner/crank or even a grub is easier than wacky styling a worm/plastic. He'd learn the basics of what a strike feels like, practice good hook setting, and get the hang of landing fish consistantly. This tactic would work great now that spawning is just a few months away here in the northern states.
