I hate to say this jolly but you deserved to get drummed on that shot. To say it was stupid is a understatement. The fact that so many agree with what you did is very disturbing. It was at the very least unethical and irresponsible. I would be running my hunting partners in the ground for that type of behavier.
At least you have taken the time to rethink your actions and maybe you need to do a little research on deer anatomy and get a better understanding on how the deers shock and immune system works. The deer can and do survive alot of wounds most hunters would suspect as fatal.
Don't spend anymore time defending what you thought was the right call at that instance. It just doesn't jive with the "I feel guilty". I do believe from your post that you do have genuine regrett and remorse for your actions.
The only good thing that has come from this is your a little wiser than before the shot.
Its easy to admit wrong in an anonymous setting though. Kind of wondering if your toteing the same remorse with you around your friends and family.
Not judgeing you Jolly, just not real fond of what you did.
