Default RE: Mossberg 500 vs. Remington 870

ORIGINAL: dawei
MossbergĀ® makes more pump shotguns than any other manufacturer. They offer a lot of value for the $$ spent; full set of choke tubes vs only one with the Remington; a truly ambidexterous safety, etc.
I bought my super mag with three chokes, full, mod, imp cyl.True the "turkey model" gun only comes with a turkey choke.

My philosophy, and mine only, is that I NEVER hunt Turkey at 50-60 yards. To me, that is not wise. It is not about accuracy or technique. It is about the hunt. It may work for you, but my philosophy is when I am ambushing turkey, I am using the art of calling, maybe a decoy to enhance the fever of that Tom, and the art of concealment via camo to lure the bird in with no outline problems. If the bird doesn't come in, he doesn't come in, yet I am not going to take that bird at 55 yards just because I can.
Well,I'll have to go against the grain here.If you can call a bird in less than 60yds he's yours! Most Tom's hang up 75 to 100yds,so I feel if he's less than that. He's commited, and you've won the game.I hunt HIGHLY pressured public land where I can not be assured if I let a tom walk @50yds,that I can get anotherchance at him another day.I need a gun that can shoot 50-60yds,and my Super Mag has never let me down. Now I don't shoot when a bird gets 50yds,I try to take the birds at 35 or less, but if a bird looks as though he's lost interest,is going to come in at the wrong angle,or is going to leave...I'm taking that shot, and I know my 870 will deliver. She's dropped them hard at these distances several times before.

I'm just not going to let a bird go that someone else may get while I'm at work the next day.It has happened a few times before, but it won't happen again. If I feel like the bird is farther than 50 I will not shoot, and I can live with that.I call 50yds my cut off point because I have a tendency to think that swollen up gobbler is closer than he is,and that way he will be less than 60 when I shoot.
