I don't want to start a long debate on this, but just because someone misses something once, that doesn't make it a bad gun. I 99.9% of the time it is operator error, not equipment error. To say that your 870 has never killed a turkey, well how could it if you don't use it? sounds like your son had a bad experiance, and you decided to blame the gun. Encourage him to keep using the 870, he won't be disappointed noce he finds a goold load that works with the gun. I know for a fact that they are capable of killing turkeys out to 55 yards, with only a 3" shell. I just don"t see a mossberg performing like that.
I am sorry that you don't think a Mossberg can perform to kill turkey out to 55 yards. You must be missing something.I can place a nice ring of shot at 50-60 yards using my trusty Mossberg 835 Ulti-mag with 3 inch federals #6, though I do not rely on any gun to take a turkey down in the 50-60 yard range. My philosophy, and mine only, is that I NEVER hunt Turkey at 50-60 yards. To me, that is not wise. It is not about accuracy or technique. It is about the hunt. It may work for you, but my philosophy is when I am ambushing turkey, I am using the art of calling, maybe a decoy to enhance the fever of that Tom, and the art of concealment via camo to lure the bird in with no outline problems. If the bird doesn't come in, he doesn't come in, yet I am not going to take that bird at 55 yards just because I can. Maybe you should not be biased on the Remington deal, because Mossberg and others can take down upland game, hell even some predators at 50-60 yards, using the right shot and being accurate.
