do the summit owners dip the cables in something when the coating wears off?
There is a guy on ebay that sells the replacement shrink tubing for around $6. Clean the old stuff off, slip the cable through the new tubing and apply heat. I have not done this as my cables are not wore down bad yet. Summit also sells replacement cables and they can sometimes be found on ebay
