RE: Best deer rifle under $600
Say what you want, but a picture is worth a thousand words. 8 X 7 bull elk take with a Remington 710 30-06 shooting 150 grain Remington Express Core-Lokt PSP. The main beams are 58 inches and 54 inches.
I bought my son a Remington 710 30-06 a little over five years ago. I had a very limited budget at the time. This is the second elk that he has taken with his 710 and one mule deer.
I’ll agree the 710 bolt is clumsy. It replaced a Savage/Stevens 110E 30-06 that has a clumsier bolt and couldn’t hit a paper plate at 200 yards. A local gunsmith says there is nothing wrong with it except a poorly made Savage/Stevens barrel.
His 710 is a tack driver. He practices on coyotes at 400 yards. It shoots right with Remington 700 BDL, Weatherby Mark V, Browning A Bolt. Ruger M77, and all the other pretty rifles. Does it really matter what a rifle looks like if it will shoot sub-MOA? I’d buy another Remington 710 without hesitation. Yes, I own a whole safe full of American made pretty rifles and handguns.
