Take 200 yard shots! It says in Shooters Bible that the .17 HMR shoots a 20g bullet at 407 f.p.e. and is usually dead accurate at 200yrds. Or with a 25g bullet it shoots 388 f.p.e. and is still usually dead accurate at 200 yards. Place that bullet good!
"Usually" accurate is right! Usually is not a gamble I like to take when it involves coyotes at 200 yards. You cannot afford to take "usually accurate shots" at 200 yards, to me its better to have accurate, reliable shots than having the predator be spooked and not come back. I would have no problem being usually accurate with my .17 HMR at 200 yards with my paper targets, but being a coyote and any other mainland predator, I wouldn't take the chance. That is why i keep my .17 HMR under 150, even rarely going to the distance of the 150 mark. My .308 does everything else with no worries, unless a tornado is sideswiping my shot.
