Generally you pick your scope accordingly to the type of hunting and terrain you hunt. You hunt big open canyons with long range shooting or thick brushy stuff? You spot and stalk or sit at wait for game to pass by? I find the variable power scopes are great....leave them at the lowest setting in close cover where I hunt whitetail. Crank it up and use a range finder and target knobs in the open canyons for spring bear.
