I place my cams on trails and not bait piles but to get great pics I use vanilla extract and place it either on the trail where I want the deer to stop or on a thin twig like branch in front of the camera where I wish them to stop. Works like a charm, and will not spook or make bucks abandon the area. At least in my area thats the case.
