Default RE: what caliber of muzzleloader do i use

ORIGINAL: GMC5.3

if im going elk hunting with a muzzleloader do i use a 45 or 50 caliber.....
A .50 is adequate, but a bigger caliber is better! In somejurisdictions, such as Colorado for example, .50 is the MINIMUM LEGAL CALIBER.And in CO., you CANNOT use sabots of any size!

A .45 would work, if you used a heavy enough bullet. I have one .45 that shoots the old Lyman/Gould 350-grain .457122, a .45/70bullet I size to .451" for the ML bore, very accurately with 90- grains of 777. I believe this loadwould be quite effectivefor elk hunting.
