You won't beat a farmer's Alfalfa fieldafter the third cutting in Late August. But after a couple frosts - that alfalfa isn't so HOT - and clover becomes preferred again.

I can grow really good clovers but only marginal alfalfa ( with reasonable lime rates) due to the acidity of our soils.

White clovers are best like the others have said.
