I agree on a good quality scope with better than average eye relief. I really like my conquests and for the 338 I would go with 3x9x40 in the conquest line. It affords 4" constant ER (1/2" more than 44 objective) and you'll be able to mount it lower, which is better especially with heavier recoil. The power is more than adequate for the situation you described and Zeiss transmitt light very well so the smaller objective will not hamper you any in low light situations.
