I like the choices Red set out for you. I've got a Leupold VX-III 4.5-14x40 that is a nice piece of glass. The one thing it has that my Nikon does not is a good extended eye relief. I don't shoot anything big enough to matter, but the Leupold strikes me as a little less likely to cause magnum eye.
