Well the rut is still a few weeks away so a mature buck is not likely to respond to aggresive calling at this time of the season. Not here in Ohio anyway. I would have tried a few soft social grunts, and then maybe some light rattling with a rattle bag. This time of year you can trigger a buck's curiosity and sometimes get him to come and investigate. You mentioned being on the edge of a bean field. That may have been the problem. When calling to a buck if there is no thick cover by you or a terrain break that would affect a deer's line of sight, it can be nearly impossible to get him to come without a decoy. If a deer hears a grunt, but can look and see no deer, he usually won't come. Something to keep in mind when considering wether to call to a buck or not. Just my 2 cents worth.
