You could use the Terrafly.com website and get a better picture of the land. Arial photos seem easer to read. To better familiarize yourself with how to read topo maps, look at the land you hunt now and study the terrain that you know deer are working. You can get a good idea why the deer travel the spots you hunt after you put your experiences to paper. You will then be able to look at unfamiliar land and read the land. Use both the topographical map and the aerial photos together and you have a deadly pre plan for when you arrive. Just a note in case you didn't know, key in on bottlenecks, natural funnels, benches, ridges, thickets and fields and put the puzzles together. Hope this helps, good luck!
