For $400 I'd say try looking at the Knight original DISC rifles. I picked up mine with a thumbhole stock for $330 at Scheels. The price on the remaining DISC's dropped drastically when Knight introduced the DISC Extreme (which sells in the $500 range). I love it. It's powerful, dead on accurate, and a pleasure to shoot. I'll probably never shoot the Traditions it replaced again.

I'd also look at the Thompson/Center Omega. It look like a really nice rifle, but I'm not sure about the price range.
