I believe your son can start big game hunting when he is 14 in NY. Anyway, my son wanted to shoot traditional three years ago, he is already went through two bows 15 and 20 pound, and he is now shooting a 25 pound bear recurve. I'll probably look into getting him something a littleheavier maybe early next year. Anyway he has a ball shooting with me and his cousin, and there is not much to worry about with him shooting traditional (setup,maintenance, etc). You may want to consider traditional. When he turns 14, I'll let him make up his own mind if he wants to shoot wheels. He is ten now, here is a picture:
