RE: help needid with calculations
my brotherinlaw is a western old timer black powder shooter, long distance that is. The loads he shoots from one of his frontloaders is like hearing about the stories you hear from the new age long distance high power wildcat rounds. To simulate the shooting of bison at ranges at and beyond 1000 yards he makes a dummy bison out of a 55 gallon plastic drum filled with wet sand with anew 2x3 1/2 inch plywood section in the middle of the sand. Place in the sand small paint stiring sticks next to the inside of the barrel entrance side.He thinks your load of 2 777 pellets and a209 primer fired from a 26 in barrel and a soft pointed 250 gr bullet would penetrate all the way to the plywood and stop from the200 yard distance,at 100 yards you would penetrate the plywood. HE said going by his table you should up your charge to 100 grs. of loose 777 using the hotest primer you could use ,he even suggest using a musket primer if your able, change your bullet to a soild lead BULLET of at least 300 grs,or a sabot 300 gr soild bullet no soft point. This load at 250 yards would penetrate the plywood and more, with a knockdown power strong enough to rock the barrel. He said when you get good enough to hit a 2 foot square at 500 yard with the 100 grs of loose 777 powder or a120 gr load of pryo or blackpowder with the biglead bullet you will still penetrate the plywood. He said the purpose of penetrating the plywood is what it would take to drop a bison without causing movement of the herd. I shot his big gun which is the same gun as a hawken with a 30 in barrel with a 12 inch peepsite, using 100 grs of black powder and a musket primer and a 345 BULLET FROM A LEE MOLD with a felt wad under the bullet,i shot the barrel at a range of 500 yards using the peepsite and got lucky enough to hit the barrel on the right side less than a inch from air it ripped a gash about 6 in long and went into the sand pile i think i shut my eyes atthe time i shot. When he shot he hit middle 8 in high ,he said that would have given him another 75 to 100 yards before dropping below the killing zone. The bullet MUSHROOMED and made it about 2in. past the plywood.
