Back to your original question; the round balls are generally considered a 100 yard proposition. Beyond that, the conicals and, particularly, the sabots are the way to go. I don't know too many folks who try to push the big lead conicals beyond 150 yards or so. They have a significant amount of drop past that. The sabot rounds with heavier charges can be pushed to 200 yards and beyond. Not for everyone, but it can be done with practice.
