RE: Gonna be a long night!!!
Sorry for the delay. I followed up the next morning. We had some sprinkles and a lot of wind that night.Tracked him into the thicket then no blood. I figured the chunks of lung coming out probably stopped him up. Hand and knees from there, like a rabbit, through the thicket. No luck. I did however find 6 very fresh scrapes. Anyway, finding nothing I went back to where the blood stopped. Finally gave up about 4 hours later. As I was leaving I saw a buck standing on the hillside where we tracked the buck the night before. He seemed a bit dazed, so I parked the truck and walked in on him slowly. Got into about 50 yards then he hopped off.He had a broken shoulder as I thought and ran over the next hill. I figured he was going to make it. He was an 8 point fairly heavy about 17" wide. Saw him again this morning at about 50 yards out of the same tree. He's got a little limp, but otherwise seems OK. Tough old bastard, after I broke 1 shoulder and wrecked a lung. Good news is that gun season comes in next Saturday. This is the 4th time I've seen him from this tree. I've got him trapped in a very small bottleneck. Hopefully I can finish the job next week. Thanks for all the interest and concern and good luck to all.
